The humble nettle has so many health benefits!

Stinging nettles have been used medicinally for millennia.

Stinging nettle, or urtica dioica, is a perennial flowering plant that has been used medicinally for ages, dating back as far as Ancient Greece. While best known for the stinging reaction that occurs when the skin comes into contact with the fine stinging hairs (also known as trichomes) located on its leaves and stems, when processed and used medicinally, stinging nettle has a number of helpful health benefits.

Stinging nettle is used to help a number of ailments. Studies have shown it has antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-ulcer, astringent and analgesic capabilities. It is used for urinary issues, to alleviate osteoarthritis and joint pain, to relieve symptoms of hay fever and eczema to name but a few.

Our retreat will be held at the Yellow Rock Sanctuary just outside Newry, Co.Down.

Yellow Rock is a beautiful, peaceful retreat centre where you go back to the essentials – being surrounded by Nature, finding meaning and letting go of the unnecessary.  

Our morning will begin with ease as we sit around the table and sip on nettle tea as Mathilde explain’s the benefits of nettle tea and how to prepare it.

Following this we will take a silent walking meditation through the gardens and newly planted woodlands that surround the centre, breathing in fresh air and allowing Mother Nature to do her thing of rebalancing our nervous system.

Then we will forage for our nettles that we will use later in the day to make a pesto that you get to bring home and share with family and friends.

Inside in the cosy yoga room we will gently move our bodies before our communal lunch of nettle soup, salad, pesto, fermented bread and treats.

After lunch we will meditate on the qualities of the nettle – her sting, reminds us to value our gifts, our talents, our worth. Nettle protects herself and her space with a mild sting that can last for days. In this, she asks us to recognise and honour the worth of what she gives and also to honour your own self worth. 

Following this we’ll go back to the kitchen to make our Nettle pesto and explain how to create a tincture.  Then we’ll wrap up the day with some embodied movement so you go home buzzing from a glorious day of self care! 

This Retreat is an invitation to reconnect with and honour yourself.  


Shirlí is your host for this Retreat and invites you to her chosen venue, Yellow Rock Sanctuary where resident chef and horticulturist Mathilde will share her wisdom and knowledge that has been passed to her from her mother, grandmother and great grandmother. 

Both Shirlí and Mathilda are passionate about health, wellness, alternative living and going back to basics!

Shirlí Muldoon Mallon

Shirlí has been teaching yoga for over 15 years and has extensive knowledge in functional movement, stress management, mindfulness, nutrition, meditation and breathwork.

Her passion to help others comes from her own healing journey following a severe car accident that resulted in years of recovery from a brain injury and broken spine. 

She will infuse your day with fun & positivity!

Mathilde grew up in a family where plants and natural remedies were the norm.

After working in hospitality, where she didn’t feel aligned with herself, Mathilde decided to follow her heart and took the risk to start everything over to find what she was truly seeking.  She heard the call of nature and choose to live more simply in the wonderful place that Yellow Rock Sanctuary is.  With Earthbeat in her chest, she will share with you her knowledge & love for nature.

Having been accustomed to live yoga classes I never imagined it any other way. Along came lockdown and Zoom yoga classes were a lifeline both for the yoga content and the banter with Shirli and the group. Then Vitality Vibe arrived and I thought initially that it wouldn’t be for me. I doubted my own motivation to use the site and if I did it would be a “robotic” process! But, knowing I could cancel at any time, I took up membership and joined a whole new world....... Yoga classes recorded from live classes (some of which I had attended) so nothing “robotic” about them. Shirli’s teaching is so natural and easy to follow, with options for all abilities and the banter is still there! The options for doing my practice are varied. I can choose the length of time I want to spend and choose the areas I want to work on (all clearly laid out). I also like to walk and I have used the site for short (18 mins) sessions to loosen up before a long hill walk. Yoga, with all its options, is only a part of what is available from Vitality Vibe. There’s an entire medical cabinet waiting to be discovered.
